NSP investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in western Nebraska

(Morrill County, NE) -- The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a fatal officer-involved in western Nebraska.

The NSP says around 11:30 Tuesday morning, officers with the Western Nebraska Intelligence and Narcotics Group Task Force were attempting to serve a search warrant at a home in Bayard, in Morrill County. During the officers’ attempt to serve the warrant at the home of 58 year old Larry Hunt, investigators say he become combative toward the officers.

The State Patrol says during the encounter, two Morrill County Sheriff’s Deputies discharged a firearm, hitting Hunt. Investigators say officers immediately provided medical aid to Hunt, who was then transported to the Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff. Hunt died from his injuries later Tuesday afternoon. One Morrill County Sheriff’s Deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office and Morrill County Attorney have requested the Nebraska State Patrol conduct an investigation into the incident. That investigation is ongoing. Nebraska State Statute requires a grand jury to convene for any in-custody
