17 year old Omaha father charged in infant daughter's death

(Omaha, NE) -- A teenage Omaha father is facing charges in connection to the death of his 6 month old daughter.

Omaha Police say on June 3rd, officers were called to a home near 38th and Jones for a report of an infant girl who was “unresponsive and not breathing." Investigators say the baby was taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center as Omaha Fire Department medics performed CPR.

At the hospital, detectives interviewed the suspect, 17 year old Alejandro Flores, and the child’s mother. Both told officers that they did not know what was wrong with the infant. Police say Flores told officers that the child “became unresponsive” while alone in his care.

Doctors at UNMC told police the injuries to the baby’s injuries were consistent with abuse. Douglas County Prosecutors say the baby died June 5th due to complications from her injuries.

On June 10th, OPD detectives interviewed Flores at Central Police Headquarters, where he “made incriminating statements and confessed to causing the injuries." Flores was taken to the Douglas County Youth Center and was charged with one count of felony child abuse by intent, causing intentional injury, a Class II felony.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 7th at 9:00 AM in Douglas County Court. Bond was set at $225,000.
