(Lancaster County, NE) -- A death investigation is underway in Lancaster County after human remains were found near a lake.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says the remains were found Thursday morning on the Southwest side of Pawnee Lake, about 11 miles west of Lincoln. Investigators say the age, sex and race of the person is not known at this time. During a media briefing Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Terry Wagner said that the remains have been sent to Omaha for an autopsy.
Wagner said that law enforcement found the remains and not a civilian. He said the body was covered up and “not visible to the naked eye,” but would not elaborate on what it was covered with. It was found in an area that is not commonly mowed, Wagner said.
The location is being treated as a crime scene. Public access for vehicular or water traffic to the south west side of Pawnee Lake is shut down while the scene is being investigated.
