Omaha Police were called to a home near 41st Avenue and F Streets late Sunday afternoon; Original 911 call details indicated a male in his 30s was inside armed with a handgun and firing the weapon.
Police say there were people inside, who were able to safely escape, leaving only the armed person inside.
Officers set up a perimeter, and an OPD trained negotiator was able to make contact by phone in an attempt to de-escalate.
After approximately 20 minutes of discussion, police say the man stepped into an enclosed porch area while an officer directed him to put down his firearm and raise his hands.
Investigators say the male discharged his firearm multiple times before exiting the porch.
Officers commanded him to drop his firearm, but he stepped outside the front porch and fired one additional time as police returned fire hitting him.
OFD paramedics attempted to render aid to the person, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was located nearby.
The investigation is ongoing at this time and the Nebraska State Patrol is assisting the Omaha Police Officer-Involved Investigations Team.
