(Omaha, NE) -- COVID-19 vaccine roll out continues to expand across the state of Nebraska, but local health experts say it is no time to easy up on coronavirus precautions.
UNMC professor and infectious disease expert Dr. Mark Rupp tells WOWT 6 News that, “Many of us are looking forward to the day when we have much more normal looking classrooms and workplaces but that day is not today."
Rupp says that coronavirus protocols won't be in place forever, but we need to get to lower case counts before that can happen. “When we get to a point where there’s very few cases of COVID in the community and what I mean by that is maybe one case per one hundred thousand so we’re only seeing a handful of cases in Douglas county per day, then I think that people can relax a lot more."
Although there is a light at the end of a year-long tunnel, Rupp says its a race between the highly contagious variants and the vaccine. Dr. Rupp says people should continue to wear masks, avoid crowds and get a COVID vaccine as soon as they can in order to avoid a fourth wave.
