Tecumseh State Correctional Institution death row inmate dies

(Tecumseh, NE) -- A Nebraska death row inmate has died.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says Saturday morning, 55 year old Arthur Gales died at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. His sentence started December 9th, 2003. Gales was sentenced to death on charges out of Douglas County that included two counts of first degree murder and a count of second degree murder.

Gales was found guilty in the November 2000 murders of 13 year old Latara Chandler and 7 year old Tramar Chandler and the attempted murder of their mother Judy Chandler. at the time, prosecutors and investigators said that Gales beat Judy nearly to death, then killed her two children as they were witnesses to his crime.

NDCS says Gales' cause of death has yet to be determined, but that he was undergoing treatment for a medical condition. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
