Officer shot at Westroads Mall sent home from the hospital

(Omaha, NE) -- An Omaha Police officer who was shot last week at the Westroads Mall is now back home to continue his recovery.

Officer Jeffrey Wittstruck suffered gunshot wounds to his head and face on Friday during a struggle with shop lifting suspect, 21 year old Kenya Jenkins Jr. Last week, OPD said that Wittstruck and Officer Joseph Kunza had responded to a shoplifting call at the mall’s JCPenney store after Jenkins was observed stealing a pack of t-shirts. Police say while Jenkins was in the loss prevention office with Kunza and Wittstruck, Jenkins reached into his sweatshirt pocket, pulled out a gun and shot at Wittstruck four times.

On Monday, a Douglas County judge set Jenkins' bail at $10 million. Jenkins is facing charges of first-degree assault, a Class 2 felony; use of a firearm to commit a felony, a Class 1C felony; and operation of a motor vehicle to avoid being arrested for a felony, a Class 4 felony.
