Dropped Cell Phone Leads To Close Call For Metro Sheriff's Deputy

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a deputy was checked out at UNMC and released after a car slammed into his stopped cruiser on westbound West Dodge at 228th around 7:45 Friday morning.

Investigators say the driver of a westbound vehicle dropped his cellphone and took his eyes off the road as he tried to find the device, crashing into the deputy’s patrol car.

A traffic stop had occurred earlier, and a driver was arrested on a warrant.

The law officer injured in the crash was in a marked unit with emergency lights activated while awaiting a driver to take the vehicle that had been stopped for the arrest.

The force of the crash pinned the doors of the patrol car shut.
