Nebraska Senator Introduces Legislation to Establish Malcolm X Day

Nebraska State Senator Terrell McKinney (of Omaha) introduced a bill last week to establish "El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, Malcolm X Day."

McKinney was first elected to the legislature in the 2020 election, he holds the seat formerly held by Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers.

Malcolm X Day has been proposed as an official state holiday in Illinois in 2015 and Missouri in 2019. Both attempts failed. Currently, only Berkeley, California observes Malcolm X Day - with city offices and schools closed.

The bill has only just been introduced, McKinney said on his Facebook page that he'll share the hearing date when he knows it.
