Bail set for La Vista mom charged in one month old's death

(La Vista, NE) -- Bail was set Tuesday for a Sarpy County woman charged in the death of her one month old son.

25 year old Sara Hartman, of La Vista, is charged with negligent child abuse resulting in death. During Hartman's first court appearance on Tuesday, a judge set bail at $10,000.

Investigators say the night of Friday, January 8th, officers and medics were called to a home near 69th and La Vista Drive for an unresponsive baby. Once on the scene, emergency crews determined that the baby boy was dead. Prosecutors say that Hartman may have been drinking before falling asleep on the couch while feeding the baby. The baby's cause of death has not been determined at this point.

A 16 month old boy was also in the home at the time of the infant's death, but was found safe in a crib. He was taken to Children's Hospital to be checked over before being placed in in the custody of Child Protective Services.

In addition to the neglect charge, Hartman was also cited with suspicion of possession of marijuana. If convicted on all charges, Hartman faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. The baby's father, 30 year old Andrew Lowell, was also charged with suspicion of misdemeanor child abuse and marijuana possession.

Hartman has another court appearance scheduled for February 2nd.
