Lincoln Police officer suffers minor injuries in weekend crash

A Lincoln Police officer suffered minor injuries after being rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver.

Police say just before midnight Saturday night, a Lincoln police cruiser was struck from behind by a Mitsubishi Montero SUV. Investigators say the officer was southbound on 40th Street between South and Normal Blvd., slowing down for a red light when his vehicle was struck from behind.

LPD says the officer was able to get out of the cruiser and render aid to the driver, a 21 year old woman. Other responding officers observed that the woman smelled of alcohol and displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. Her BAC tested at .149, nearly twice the legal limit, and she was cited and released for DUI and Negligent Driving.

The officer was treated at a local area hospital for what are considered non-life-threatening injuries. Damage to the cruiser is extensive and the vehicle is considered a total loss.
