A Nebraska prison inmate diagnosed COVID-19 has died.
On Friday, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes announced that an inmate in his 60's died at a hospital in Lincoln. NDCS says the inmate had tested positive for COVID-19 before entering the hospital. They say the inmate also had multiple underlying health conditions.
Prison officials say for the privacy of the family, as well as to maintain the confidentiality of the man’s medical records in accordance with state law, NDCS is not releasing the name of the inmate. The NDCS says the man was sentenced for first degree murder out of Douglas County.
The NDCS say the man's exact cause of death has not yet been determined. They say as is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
