Law Enforcement From Both Sides Of The River Contribute To Pursuit Arrest

Around 1:30 a.m. Friday, investigators say a vehicle sped away from police after a traffic stop in a parking lot near Interstates 80-29 in southwest Council Bluffs.

Police say one officer pulled his cruiser behind a vehicle and was attempting to make contact with a person inside, later identified as 21-year Garrett Knipe of Tipton, Iowa.

But, investigators say as the officer walked up to Knipe’s vehicle, Knipe put it in reverse and rammed the officer’s cruiser.

The officer was able to get out of the way and was not injured.

Police say Knipe then eluded officers west on 23rd Ave, and north on So. 35th St.

The pursuit was called off due to safety concerns, as police say Knipe was driving into oncoming traffic at over 100 mph.

The Omaha Police helicopter, though, picked up the trail and followed the vehicle into Omaha, where "stop sticks" were put down to deflate the tires.

They say Knipe and a female passenger ran from the vehicle in the area of 48th and Cuming, the copter directed officers to the area, and arrests were made.

Warrants for Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Theft 1st (Possession of Stolen Property), and Felony Eluding will be requested for Knipe.

The Nebraska State Patrol K9, and Pottawattamie County Sheriff Deputies assisted.
