An inmate who was supposed to be held for transfer to a Nebraska psychiatric facility after being released from prison was mistakenly released.
The Nebraska Department of Corrections says 28 year old Amjad Almusa was discharged from the Omaha Correctional Center Monday morning, despite a court order to be committed to a state psychiatric hospital.
Prison officials say the order required that Almusa be transferred to the Norfolk Regional Center upon completion of his sentence at OCC. “Standard procedure is that an individual is held at the facility until the appropriate law enforcement agency assumes custody to fulfill the detainer or hold,” said Scott R. Frakes, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. “In this case, the hold was overlooked and the individual was released from the facility. The circumstances surrounding this release are under investigation.”
NDCS say law enforcement was notified as soon as the oversight was detected. Almusa started serving a one-year sentence on April 27th, 2020. He was sentenced on two counts of assault on a Department of Health and Human Services employee out of Madison County.
Almusa is described as a white man, 5’8”, 180 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact local authorities or the Nebraska State Patrol.
