'Blue Mass' to be held Friday in honor of metro's first responders

The Omaha Fire and Police Departments are inviting the public to a special Friday morning mass that will honor those in public service.

The Omaha Metro Area’s 13th Annual Police and Fire Blue Mass for first responders, and their families and friends, will take place on Friday, October 23rd at 10:00 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, near 86th and Pacific streets.

The “Blue Mass” dates back to 1934, when the uniforms worn by many first responders were blue. The Blue Mass honors Saint Michael the Archangel, the Patron Saint of those employed in the Public Safety field, and Saint Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters. The “Blue Mass” pays tribute to those who continue to serve in the public safety field and remembers those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

All Omaha/Metro Area Fire and Police personnel, their families and friends, and the public are encouraged to attend. There will be a special blessing at the end of Mass for first responders.
