A Giant In Omaha And Professional Sports Has Died

A life and career, with a glorious path from North Omaha through Wrigley Field Chicago to immortality in Canton, Ohio, is being remembered.

Memorials pour in upon the passing of Chicago Bears' legend, Pro Football Hall of Famer, and Omaha native Gale Sayers at the age of 77.

Sayers had been slowed by dementia in recent years

The electrifying running back played for The "Monsters of the Midway" from 1965 through 1971 after a collegiate career at the University of Kansas and a memorable Nebraska interscholastic career for the Central Eagles in football and track and field.

Knee injuries pretty much hastened his retirement far too early in the eyes of pro football fans, and Sayers was enshrined in Canton in 1977.
