Memorial Stadium The Scene Of A 9/11 Remembrance

Early Friday, "Patriot Day," Lincoln Police officers and firefighters, including LPD recruits and ROTC students, solemnly climbed the stairs of Nebraska Memorial Stadium, honoring those law officers and firefighters, who died in the line of duty on 9/11.

"Performing the same actions as the men and women who ran up and down those stairs of the World Trade Center Towers bears witness to the heroism of those first responders and their willingness to confront the unspeakable horror that became 9/11," says Officer Luke Bonkiewicz.

"As we climb the stairs, we hope to remind people of their sacrifice, their bravery in the most terrifying of circumstances."

Many wore or carried equipment weighing about 20 pounds as they took to the steps of the stadium.

This gesture by Lincoln first responders takes on even more meaning with this "Patriot Day" being the eve of the funeral of Lincoln Police Investigator Mario Herrera, who died in the line of duty.
