Preston Love Jr. to be Democratic write-in candidate for U.S. Senate

Nebraska Democrats are throwing another hat into the ring for the November U.S. Senate race.

On Thursday, the Nebraska Democratic Party announced that longtime community leader Preston Love Jr. has their endorsement to be the Democratic write-in candidate for U.S. Senate in the November 3rd election.

The NDP is endorsing Love over the party's official candidate Chris Janicek. In June, the party called for Janicek to bow out of the race after he made “sexually inappropriate” comments about a staff member in a group text message. Janicek has apologized for the texts, but says he will not drop out of the race. Janicek and Sasse took part in a televised debate last Friday.

According to a media release from the NDP, Love worked in the civil rights movement and has remained passionate about continuing that work in North Omaha. He teaches Black Studies and Politics at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, is an author, a former Husker football player and is the founder and CEO of the Black Votes Matter Institute of Community Engagement and 4Urban.org.

The NDP says because there is no law in the state of Nebraska where a political party can petition the Secretary of State for a candidate to be removed from their partisan ballot line, the party voted to run a write-in candidate. According to the release, other Democrats who ran in the primary are precluded by state law from running as a write-in in the general election.
