Teen Accused Of Shooting Lincoln Police Officer Facing Murder Charges

The 17-year-old accused of shooting and killing a Lincoln police officer last month has been officially charged with first-degree murder.

Felipe Vazquez was charged in Lancaster County Court on Tuesday and denied bond. Investigators say Vazquez shot Lincoln Police Investigator Mario Herrera near 33rd and Vine streets as police attempted to serve a warrant in connection to a March homicide.

Vazquez was also charged with use of a firearm to commit a felony, first-degree assault of an officer, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possessing a firearm by a fugitive of justice, possessing a stolen firearm and escape using force or deadly weapon.

Vazquez and 19 year old Orion Ross were arrested moments after the shooting. Court records show officers attempted to get Ross and Vazquez to come out of a locked room inside a home for roughly 20 minutes before they broke out a window and fled.

According to Lincoln Police, Vazquez fired a handgun while running from the home, hitting Herrera. He died at an Omaha hospital early Labor Day morning.

Funeral services for Herrera will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
