Council Bluffs man indicted for having Molotov cocktail during protests

The United States Attorney's Office says a 25 year old Council Bluffs man has been indicted on federal charges stemming from protests in Omaha earlier this summer.

According to a media release from Joe Kelley's office, Steven Fitch is being charged in the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska for being in unlawful possession of a destructive device.

Prosecutors say Fitch was reportedly in possession of a Molotov cocktail during May 31st protests in downtown Omaha. They say Fitch was arrested that day for having the device, which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

Fitch faces a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release if found guilty. Fitch has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The US Attorney's Office says the case is being investigated by the Omaha Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
