Lincoln Police Officer Wounded In The Line Of Duty Has Died

Lincoln Police say one of their officers, who was shot and critically wounded last month, died at 3:40 a.m. Monday.

Mario Herrera was a 23 year veteran of the Lincoln Police force. He was shot August 28th while attempting to serve an arrest warrant with other law officers.

“Sadness does not begin to describe fully our community's sense of loss with the passing of Investigator Mario Herrera," says Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird.

"Our hearts are with his wife, Carrie, and their four children, and we remain forever grateful for their family's profound sacrifice in service to keeping our community safe."

“Nebraska’s law enforcement family has suffered a tragic loss today,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We send our deepest condolences to Investigator Herrera’s family and friends, along with the entire Lincoln Police Department and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our troopers were honored to work beside Mario, and will forever remember his service and sacrifice.”

Officer Herrera underwent several surgeries plus blood transfusions and was eventually transferred to Nebraska Medicine.

Two people are in custody.

Lincoln Police say officers were at a home in the area of 33rd and Vine serving a second-degree assault arrest warrant for 17 year old Felipe Vazquez in connection to a March homicide.

Officers said during the process of serving the warrant, Herrera was shot after Vazquez and another suspect, Orian Ross, broke through the front window of the home and attempted to flee.
