In an effort to promote hunger awareness in the metro area, the WoodmenLife building in downtown Omaha will be lit Orange September 2-6.
WoodmenLife is partnering with the Food Bank for the Heartland, which estimates one in four children in the 93 counties it serves may not have regular access to the meals they need.
“More Heartland families are experiencing food insecurity due to the impact of the pandemic, and many are seeking emergency food assistance for the first time” says Brian Barks, president and CEO of Food Bank for the Heartland. “WoodmenLife and its extraordinary associates are dedicated to the Food Bank during Hunger Action Month and throughout the year by supporting our mission and generating awareness of the thousands of hungry children, families, and seniors across Nebraska and western Iowa.”
Feeding America estimates the number of food insecure individuals in the U.S. has risen from more than 37 million to more than 54 million due to COVID-19. In Food Bank for the Heartland’s 93-county service area, food insecurity has jumped from 207,000 to 296,000 individuals.
