The hope is groundbreaking for a Vietnam veterans' memorial in the Metro will be next year.
The location is between Walnut Creek Recreation Area and SumTur Amphitheatre in Papillion, not far from the Omaha National Cemetery.
“We’ve had things that have wanted to develop here, and we’ve said no to everything because we wanted to keep it more natural. Then when this opportunity came up, there was something about it. This is the perfect site,” Papillion Mayor David Black tells 6 News.
The Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial will now go there, featuring a restored Huey helicopter and the recognition of the 395 Nebraskans killed in the Southeast Asia conflict from the '60's into the early '70's.
"That’s one thing we want everyone to understand. This isn’t just an Eastern Nebraska monument. This is a Nebraska monument for Vietnam veterans,” said Howard Ball, a Vietnam vet who is working on the effort.
