Staff member assaulted at Lincoln Correctional Center

A staff member from the Lincoln Correctional Center is recovering after being punch in the head by an inmate.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says on Sunday, an inmate became combative as staffers attempted to put him in restraints so he could be moved to another area of the facility. They say he became physically aggressive and punched a staff member twice in the head. NDCS says the second punch caused the staff member to fall backward and hit her head on the concrete.

NDCS says after running off and repeatedly refusing instructions, another staff member deployed pepper spray in an attempt to gain control of the inmate. They say the burst missed the inmate, but he still fell to the ground. At that point, the inmate complied and was restrained. The injured staff member went to the hospital for treatment of a concussion.

Prison officials say the incident will be investigated with findings provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution.
