New ballot drop off boxes to be installed in Douglas County

(Douglas County Election Commission)

New ballot drop off boxes will be going up in Douglas County.

The Douglas County Election Commission says they will soon upgrade their official ballot drop boxes to more secure and durable models. Douglas County Election Commissioner Brian Kruse says the existing drop boxes will be replaced with larger, more secure models. “Voters should not be alarmed if they notice differences in the drop boxes in the coming months.”

The new boxes are stainless steel and the Election Commission say they will have a longer useful life in Nebraska weather conditions. Drop boxes will be placed in the same locations, but will be somewhat different in function and appearance. The Commission says the process to replace each drop box should create minimal disruption for voters.

The Election Commission reminds voters that depositing election-related materials, including by-mail ballot applications, voter registration applications, and early voting ballots, into official ballot drop boxes is the most direct method to return documents to them. No postage is needed, drop boxes are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, and materials are frequently collected and delivered directly to the Election Commission.

Funding for the new drop off boxes was included in CARES Act allocations by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
