A Settlement Is Reached In Zachary Bear Heel's Civil Case

The city reaches a 550-thousand dollar settlement with the mother and estate of Zachary Bear Heels, who died while being taken into police custody in south central Omaha three years ago.

On June 5th, 2017, officers were called to investigate a man, who turned out to be Bear Heels, causing a disturbance at a service station at 60th & Center.

Travelling on a bus to his Oklahoma home, he was asked to get off the coach in Omaha, eventually arriving at the convenience store.

Bear Heels then struggled with police, with an officer tasing him 12 times.

Bear Heels died; "excited delirium" ruled the cause of death;

The settlement is on the Omaha City Council agenda next week.

The mayor, deputy city attorney, and finance director approved it earlier this week.
