School Discipline Measure Falters In Nebraska Legislature

A school discipline bill stalls in the Nebraska Legislature, failing to get a vote.

Education Committee Chairman Mike Groene introduced the bill, arguing the problem of discipline in school buildings needs to be addressed to maximize learning time for all children.

The bill would have allowed teachers to use restraints on disruptive students .

Senator Julie Slama of Peru said, “children are more violent in the classrooms.”

Groene, a North Platte senator said, “teachers, administrators, parents need that training.”

State teacher’s organizations supported the proposal.

Omaha Senator Justin Wayne pointed out the Omaha Public Schools, the state’s largest school district, was against it.

Wayne is a former member of the O-P-S board.
