UNL Police investigating death of 20 year old fraternity member

A death investigation is underway at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's police department is heading up the investigation into the death of 20 year old UNL student Luke Weiland. WOWT 6 News reports that Weiland was found dead in the room of his Delta Tau Delta fraternity house by friends Friday afternoon.

The friends told investigators that they hadn’t seen or heard from Weiland since 10 p.m. the night before and became worried, prompting them to check his room.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue reportedly attempted CPR but Weiland had been deceased for too long for it to be effective. The initial cause of death is believed to be asphyxiation, with investigators saying it appears Weiland choked on his vomit.

At this time, it's unknown whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. No alcohol was found in Weiland's room. Weiland's friends tell police the last time they saw him, he seemed normal.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators say anyone who had contact with Weiland in the days and hours before his death are encouraged to contact police.
