Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo to reopen more building, increase capacity

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is reopening more of its indoor exhibits following shutdowns due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Beginning Friday, July 3rd, visitors will be allowed inside the Hubbard Expedition Madagascar, Gorilla Valley and Orangutan Forest again. They also say the elevator building, which provides access to these areas, will also be open.

Overall capacity of the zoo has also been increased to 9,200 people on grounds, but officials say they will keep building capacity at 50 percent of occupancy rate.

Zoo President and CEO Dennis Pate says the parameters allow guests to safely social distance between groups. “It continues to be one careful step at a time as the Zoo reopens buildings and attractions. The health and safety of our animals, guests and staff is our top priority.”

Visitors at the zoo will still have to wear a mask while in any building, but children under the age of five and those with medical conditions are exempt from the rule. Zoo leaders say masks are required in order to protect the animals.

The Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium, the Desert Dome, the upper level of the Lied Jungle®, Alaskan Adventure, Stingray Beach, Lozier Giant Screen Theater and the Gift Shop are also currently open. Skyfari is operating on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Guests will still have to make a reservation for a time to enter the Zoo in advance of their visit at OmahaZoo.com/Hours-and-Admission. Reservations can be made up to three days in advance of the visit.
