OPS Board Votes On Calendar To Get School Year Started Amid Covid-19

The Omaha Public Schools board met Monday night with a heavy focus on getting the 2020-2021 school year started in the era of Covid-19 coronavirus.

The board votes to require masks for all students and staff and sets August 11th as a school year start date.

Much of the discussion was about the district's "Family 3-2" model released last week that has students with last names beginning from A - K in school buildings Mondays and Tuesdays with the rest on Thursdays and Fridays.

Wednesdays would alternate;

Brittany Meicenbach tells 6 News she wants to know how her young child can properly e-learn two to three times a week when he's still learning the basics.

"He can't read and write effectively yet, and I just don't see how you can teach that on an i-pad. I don't see how teachers can communicate with them on an i-pad when they can't read and write," Meicenbach said.

The board also votes to extend the winter break by a week.
