Omaha Police On The Lookout For Excessive Speeders

The Omaha Police Traffic Unit will be stepping up excessive speed enforcement operations through the end of June.

A $17,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety is paying for extra officers to look for drivers who are driving well over the speed limit. In addition, officers will be looking for drivers who could be distracted while using electronic devices while traveling at high speeds.

Operations will be conducted throughout the city at various times during the campaign. The goal of the “Excessive Speed” campaign is to increase the public’s awareness of the speed limit while traveling within the City of Omaha and to limit distractions while driving.

Of the 32 motor vehicle fatalities that the Omaha Police Department Traffic Unit investigated in 2019, investigators say high speeds were a contributing factor in 16 of them.
