Mayor Jean Stothert made it official on Thursday. The City of Omaha will not be opening up it's 15 outdoor swimming pools this summer.
Stothert says opening up the outdoor pools for such a short time just didn't make sense this year.
Since it's not yet known when Governor Pete Ricketts will loosen rules that apply to pools, the pool season could end up being only about a month long. It would take two weeks just to get the pools ready, plus schools may be starting earlier this year.
Stothert says the city is prepared to open its three indoor pools, Elkhorn, Mockingbird and Montclair, if Ricketts loosens restrictions.
Parks Director Brook Bench says the city knows the decision is disappointing to a number of families. He says a number of hydrant parties are being planned and splash grounds across the city are open.
Not reopening the pools will save the city $2 million.
