Protesters Gather Outside Omaha City Hall

A rally took place Tuesday at Omaha City Hall as demonstrators called for justice following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week and the shooting death of James Scurlock in downtown Omaha last Saturday night.

Scurlock was shot by an Omaha bar owner during Saturday's protests in the Old Market, but the Douglas County attorney ruled it was self defense.

Mayor Jean Stothert came out of her office and walked right into the middle of an angry very loud group of protesters. "There were a lot of people yelling and screaming," she says.

She says she decided to meet with protesters during their rally to let them know their concerns are being heard.

Many had gathered outside city hall in the afternoon and many more arrived ahead of the 8 p.m. curfew. Many began leaving minutes before the curfew, and few were left even 10 minutes after the curfew had passed.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting Stothert was granted emergency powers. City council members voted to give the mayor to ability extend a state of emergency declaration including a curfew for up to a week.

The Council also voted to pass a resolution condemning the actions of the Minneapolis police officers involved in Floyd's death. The resolution noted that the city council grieves with Floyd's family for their loss and joins them in their call for justice and peace.
