Henry Doorly Zoo announces reopening guidelines

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium have announced their guidelines for reopening on June 1st.

In a statement from the zoo on Tuesday, officials say they are planning a phased reopening. "Phase 1 includes no indoor access but allows outdoor guest usage with clearly defined guidelines for the health and safety of Zoo guests and staff." There will be no public access to indoor buildings including exhibits, restaurants or the gift shop.

The zoo says there will be timed ticketing to keep guest attendance at a capacity that allows adherence to the 6-foot social distancing recommendations. "Phase 1 capacity will be no more than 3000 guests at any given time and requires a time reservation to be made ahead of the visit." Reservations can be made two days in advance. The Lozier Giant Screen Theater, Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails and Scott Alaskan Adventure Splash Park will also remain closed.

Guests will also be strongly encouraged to wear masks as they navigate the zoo's exhibits. High-trafficked areas will be marked by paw prints to encourage safe distances and signs will be placed throughout to direct traffic through the 1.8-mile one-way walking path.

The zoo says the point of entry will be at the main gates, while the exit will be at the north gates.

Times are available every half hour between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. There will be a members-only hour from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM from June 1st through June 7th.

Restrooms, concessions, and retail will be at outside venues. Additionally, over 50 Hand Sanitizing stations have been added and drinking fountains will not be available. Rides will be available on Sue’s Carousel with proper social distancing guidelines in place. The tram service will not be operational, but a limited supply of stroller, wagon, ECVs and wheelchair rentals will be available.

Zoo Director and CEO Dennis Pate says they are excited to get people back into the zoo. “We are so grateful for the outpouring of community support during our closure. The Zoo’s reopening plan has been done with deliberate thought and discussion to keep the safety of our guests, animals, and employees as our utmost priority. Our plan is very conservative, but we believe that by taking one careful step at a time, we can assure a safe and enjoyable Zoo experience for all.”
