Easter Fire Forces Family Out Of Their Omaha Home

An Easter Sunday fire forced ten people out of their home on a cold, snowy afternoon.

The fire broke out around 3:15 at 112th Street and Martha Circle. Neighbor Patty Roche says she and her husband were cooking Easter dinner when they saw fire engines starting to roll into their cul-de-sac.

“It's devastating. It just breaks my heart. I mean especially on Easter,” Roche told 6 News. "Next thing you know we got seven fire trucks and the neighbors garage was just in flames, it just… burst into flames."

There were ten adults in the home and they were able to safely get outside, but were poorly dressed for the weather conditions. “By the time we got out here, they were out here. So I brought them some blankets so they could keep warm. it's too cold,” Roche says.

The fire caused significant damage to the garage and attic area, but firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the main portion of the house.

One of the adults had difficulty breathing and was treated but refused to be taken to the hospital. On a day where many are isolated from friends and family due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the made for a heartbreaking ending to this Easter Sunday.

“What are they going to do? I feel so bad for them,” Roche told 6 News. The American Red Cross will help the people with temporary living arrangements.

Investigators say the careless disposal of smoking materials sparked the fire, which caused about $65,000 damage.
