Health officials in northeast Nebraska say a Crofton High School student has tested positive for the coronavirus. That has lead the district in Knox County to cancel classes and all events for the rest of the week.
Parents have also been warned about possible exposures at recent events. "On the evening of March 10, the North Central District Health Department was made aware of the first presumptive positive coronavirus case in our district. The person started experiencing symptoms Thursday, March 5th," the department said in a Facebook post.
Crofton Public Schools officials say people may have been exposed to coronavirus during a couple of games at the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Lincoln.
The first was the Hartington Cedar Catholic vs. Weeping Water Game on March 5th at 9:00 AM at Lincoln Southwest High School. Health officials say those exposures may have occurred in the Hartington Cedar Catholic general fan section.
The second game was Crofton vs. Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur held on March 5th at 7:00 PM at Lincoln North Star High School. Fans sitting in the Crofton general fan section may have been exposed.
Health officials also say Crofton Elementary 4th-6th grade students and staff who attended school on March 10th may also have been exposed.
NCDHD has begun investigations and is assessing potential exposures to determine the next steps. Any close contacts will be asked to self-quarantine and be monitored by health officials.
"At this time, we are encouraging the community to self-monitor their symptoms. Symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If you feel you are ill, please call your provider and follow their next steps," district officials said.
