Coronavirus Concerns Force Several Fremont Public Buildings To Close

The mayor in Fremont says precautions are being taken after the first positive test for the Coronavirus in Nebraska.

The Douglas County Health Department says a 36-year-old woman who returned from the UK in February tested positive for Coronavirus.

She attended a basketball game at the Fremont YMCA where several other events were being held Saturday. An estimated 1,500 people passed through the doors.

Mayor Scott Getschman says the library and senior center will be closed this week as a precaution and those buildings will go through a deep cleaning. The YMCA was thoroughly cleaned over the weekend.

Fremont Public Schools, Midland University, Bergan Catholic Schools and Trinity Lutheran School are closed this week.

Fremont Public Schools were only scheduled to have three days of classes this week before the start of spring break. Getschman says dozens of Midland students volunteered with the Special Olympics basketball tournament on Saturday.

Getschman tells KFAB the city is working closely with the Three Rivers Public Health Department.

Health officials are asking anyone who might have been at that basketball game at the Fremont YMCA last Saturday or anyone at the VFW Dinner at 90th and Blair High Road this past Wednesday to contact the Three Rivers Health Department and self-quarantine.
