Capitol District Ice Rink Officially Opens Today

OMAHA, Nebraska - The Capitol District Ice Rink will officially open today.

Kylie Vonnahme is an organizer with the Holiday Lights Festival and tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB, "It is a really important part of the festival because it is tied to our "Shine the Light on Hunger" campaign which is led Conagra Brand Foundation and that is where a portion of all proceeds from the ice rink benefits Food Bank for the Heartland. it is a really big part of the initiative and a fun way to give back."

There is a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the ice rink. Holiday guests include the Grinch, Frozen characters, a skating Santa, events for kids and holiday movies. For tonight only, if you bring a food item to donate, skating is $5.

Those skating are encouraged to make donations of nonperishable food throughout the season and there are collection barrels located at the rink and at drop-off locations around town.

The Conagra Brands Foundation's goal is to provide 1.75 million meals through the "Shine the Light on Hunger" campaign this year.

The rink will be open through January 21st.
