After months of dealing with the devastating spring flood, nearly 1,500 victims from Nebraska and Iowa got a chance to relax and take a break during a free day at the Henry Doorly Zoo on Sunday.
United Way of the Midlands teamed up with the Kellogg Company Fund and online wholesaler Boxed to provide victims a day off from the flood recovery stress.
Flood victims Jim and Loraine Davenport moved back into their home just weeks ago and say it's the assistance from their community that has helped them get back on their feet.
“It's made all the difference in the world and we're so thankful for that and all the assistance we've had," Jim Davenport tells 6 News." "There's no way we would have been back in this timeframe without them."
They say even a small gesture like a free day at the zoo helps them know their community is on their side after all this time.
The day at the zoo featured concessions, a photo booth, face painting, goodie bags and interactive animal exhibits.
Local organizations involved in long-term flood relief were also there making sure that families had resources available to them all in one space while providing a fun day for their kids.
