Nebraska Supreme Court Asked To Decide Election Commissioners Appointments

LINCOLN, Nebraska - The Nebraska Supreme Court will apparently decide whether election commissioners in Nebraska are appointed or elected.

Currently, election commissioners in Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy Counties are appointed by the Governor. On October 8th, Attorney General Doug Peterson filed a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to order elections. That is after he stated an opinion that the positions be elected.

This could be a problem for Douglas County. Commissioner Brian Kruse was appointed by Governor Pete Ricketts and his term expires in 2020. KFOR reports that Governor Ricketts issued a statement that he will not appoint a replacement until that lawsuit is settled.

Sarpy County Election Commissioner Michelle Andahl and Lancaster County Election Commissioner Dave Shively's terms expire in 2022.
