Mills County Board Continue To Focus On Buyouts

MILLS COUNTY, Iowa - The Mills County Board of Supervisors met to discuss buyouts on Tuesday.

About 90 people have signed up. Supervisors approved a plan that puts about half of those on the county's buyout application. This after they designated an area that runs from the Pottawattamie County line west of 180th Street down to Lambert Avenue. It then runs from Lambert Avenue west of I-29 to the Missouri County line.

6 News reports once the buyout is complete, the county then owns that property. They cannot rebuild on it so there is no way for them to generate any tax money. That means Mills County would lose about 1/4 of a million dollars in tax revenue each year.

Others not in that designated area may still qualify for a buyout. Mills County officials want to first have discussions with those property owners to look at alternatives first.
