Tech giant Google officially announced it's entrance into Nebraska Friday morning by breaking ground on its Papillion Data Center, a $600 million boost to the state's economy.
The data center will be built on a 275-acre site near Highway 50 and Schram Road. "These data centers are really the engines of the internet," Google spokesman Dan Harbeke says. "When you think about performing an internet search or using your g-mail, all of that is powered by these data centers for billions of people across the world."
Harbeke says the data center will create at least 30 full time, permanent jobs and hundreds of construction jobs. It's scheduled to be completed over the next 18 to 24 months.
Data centers for Facebook and Travelers Insurance will be among its future neighbors. Google also has data centers in Council Bluffs.
