Mumps In The Metro

Omaha Nebraska - There is a confirmed case of mumps in the Omaha metro area.The confirmed case involves a resident of the St. John Paul II Newman Center near the University of Nebraska Omaha campus.The center is home to 131 students that attend higher education institutions in Omaha.

The Douglas County Health Department and the Newman Center are taking the necessary precautions to minimize the spread.They also contacted universities and colleges in the metro area.Nebraska Medicine and UNO Health Center were also notified to assist students, faculty and staff if necessary.

Health officials state that the MMR vaccine prevents most cases but not all.Those attending UNO and those who live and visit the Newman Center are encouraged to practice good hygiene and limit physical contact. Also cover coughs and sneezes and wash hands frequently.
