Lincoln Kwik Shop Customer Arrested For Shooting Theft Suspect

Lincoln Police have arrested a woman accused of shooting a man who was trying to steal alcohol from a convenience store on August 1.

Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister says 38 year old Shelby Jones was a customer in the Kwik Shop at 56th and Holdrege when 22 year old Tilian J. Tilian tried to steal liquor from the store around 1:30 a.m.

Bliemeister says the clerk saw Tilian trying to steal two bottles of liquor and attempted to physically restrain him and prevent him from leaving the store. He says Jones, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, saw what was happening, pulled out her handgun and put herself between Tilian and the exit.

Bliemeister says Tilian broke free from the clerk and ran past Jones and out the front door. He says Jones then shot Tilian as he left the store, hitting him in the back of the arm. Bliemeister says the gunfire just missed the store clerk, who also had exited the store.

After conducting interviews, reviewing video surveillance and collecting forensic evidence, investigators determined that Tilian was fleeing when Jones shot him.

Jones was arrested Friday for first-degree assault.
