Deputy Wants Suspect's Medical Records After Exposed To Blood

A Douglas County Sheriff's deputy is requesting the results of a blood test from a 32 year old man after he apparently spit blood at Irvington rescue crew members and at the deputy.

On July 26th, deputies were called to 71st Street and Bennington Road to check on a man who was aggressive and appeared confused. Those who made the call thought he could be mentally ill and a possible danger to himself and others.

Irvington Fire Department crew members were helping the man when the deputy arrived. According to court documents, the Irvington Fire Department team was moving the man into an ambulance, accompanied by a deputy to ensure their safety.

While on the way to the hospital, the man apparently hit himself causing a nose bleed and blood to flow into his mouth. Documents state he spit the blood onto three of the fire department officials and the deputy.

The court affidavit states that blood samples of the man were taken at the hospital to screen for communicable disease. The affidavit states the deputy is requesting the results of the blood tests to determine if any of the first responders were at risk of disease that could be transmitted through the man's blood.
