Careless Smoking Blamed For Northwest Omaha Apartment Fire

Omaha Firefighters could see smoke and flames coming from the Benz Apartment complex near 140th and Manderson Plaza when they rolled out of the station around 2:30 this morning.

The flames were shooting through the roof when they arrived and a second alarm was called. At one point, the third floor collapsed down to the the bottom floor.

Firefighters went door to door to make sure residents got out safely. There were no injuries reported. Once they made sure everyone was out firefighters went into one apartment and retrieved a wedding dress.

Investigators say 12 units were damaged and the Red Cross is now assisting the families that have no place to live. Fire officials say the cause of the fire was carelessly discarded smoking materials on a balcony. Damage is estimated at $750,000.
