Update: Hostage Situation And Death of Man In Residence Connected

Update: At 12:29 p.m., Pottawattamie County 911 received a call to a residence in the 200 block of Yellow Pole Road that a person was down inside. Pottawattamie County Deputies and Council Bluffs Police responded to the call and they found a 51 year old deceased man inside the home.

Information developed during this investigation and an earlier chase and hostage situation were connected. This is a complex investigation and officials are in the process of notifying families and following up on additional leads. No further information will be released at this time.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department, Council Bluffs Police and the Pottawattamie County Attorney's Office are planning to release more details at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Council Bluffs Police say an officer shot and killed a man during a standoff in the 1400 block of Indian Hills Road early Wednesday morning.

Police say around 2:15 a.m. a deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office attempted to make a traffic stop on a green 1997 Dodge Ram pickup in the area of 205th Street and Juniper Road. The driver of the pickup refused to stop and began a pursuit.

The deputy reported that several gunshots were fired at him from inside the pickup during the short pursuit. The pickup was able to elude the deputy, who lost sight of the vehicle.

Investigators say the pickup then drove southbound into Council Bluffs on Railroad Avenue, where it was spotted by Council Bluffs police officers. Police say the officers tried to get it pulled over but another pursuit began and shots were fired out of the pickup at the pursuing officers.

One marked CBPD police SUV was struck by the gunfire. Investigators say the pickup left Railroad Avenue and entered onto Indian Hills Drive. In the 1400 block of Indian Hills, they say the driver lost control of the truck and the it rolled onto its side.

Police say several officers surrounded the pickup and found it occupied by the man driving and a female passenger. Officers saw that the man was armed with two guns, one was pointed at the female and the other outside of the wrecked truck in the direction of officers.

Investigators say officers attempted to convince the driver to put down his weapons and to surrender, but he refused. Police say an officer at the scene fired one round at the driver, striking him in the head, ending the hostage situation.

The woman was taken to a Council Bluffs hospital for a precautionary exam. Police say the names of the dead driver, the female hostage and the officers/deputies involved will be released at a later time. No officers or deputies were injured during the pursuits or hostage incident.

The incident is being investigated by the State of Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation, with assistance being provided by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department.
