LaVista City Council Considering An Occupation Tax

The City of LaVista is considering the implementation of occupation tax.

The proposed 1.5 percent tax would apply to any business that serves food and drink, including restaurants, cafés, bakeries, coffee shops, food trucks and caterers.

"We feel like we provide great amenities in our city and services to our citizens," Mayor Doug Kindig tells Newsradio 1110 KFAB. "This is a way that we can continue to do that along with the added expense our developments."

Consideration of a restaurant tax comes as work continues on the massive City Centre development on 84th Street that will feature a number of bars and restaurants. Kindig projects the tax would bring it will collect up to $700,000 annually.  "I wish that we were under the same state statute as Omaha and Lincoln. There's actually a cap on first class cities that we can't go over $700,000."

The City Council will be considering this proposed tax during it's meeting on August 20 at 6 p.m.
