I know I've seen Cats before. I just don't remember anything about it. This version of Cats has everything that fans of the musical would want. A competent director, Tom Hooper. He won an Oscar for The King's Speech and directed the Oscar-winning Les Miserables adaptation. Cats has star power. Pulling from all sorts of different backgrounds. Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, James Corde, and Rebel Wilson. It is using dancers from hip hop backgrounds and ballet backgrounds. It has everything you want in a big screen version of this iconic musical.
The tech on the actors looks interesting, might take a bit of getting used to in the theater. The actors faces appear almost superimposed onto human/cat hybrids. In a making of featurette released earlier this week, they mentioned that no one wore a cat suit suit the making of this movie. All done on computers with CGI and different effects (might be the first film to use The Lion King's new tech).
It looks interesting. Clearly there's enough talent involved with this project that it should succeed. I just don't know if it's for me.
Cats hits theaters December 20th.
