Worst Movies of 2019...So Far

Six months down, six to go. I thought it would be fun to take a look at the worst movies 2019 has given us so far. Some of these movies still are enjoyable. Some should have never seen the light of day. These are the five worst movies the year has given us to this point.

5. – REPLICAS

Release date: January 11th

My Score: 1.5/5

Rotten Tomatoes: 10%

This Keanu Reeves starring sci-fi thriller is pretty much the only thing he’s gotten wrong this year.Spoiler alert, he’ll appear in two films in the TOP 10 later tonight.I have not seen his work in the Netflix rom-com “Won’t You Be My Maybe”, but he’s having a banner year.In Replicas, Keanu plays a scientist at a tech firm who becomes obsessed with bringing his dead family members back to life.Flirts with being “so bad it’s good”.This movie is terrible, but I had fun with it.If you’re into that sort of thing, it’s worth a watch.

Replicas is available to rent on DVD/Blu-Ray/Streaming now.

4. – DARK PHOENIX

Released: June 7th

My Score: 1/5/5

Rotten Tomatoes: 23%

A movie sure to get a lot of love from The Razzies this winter, Dark Phoenix is the final X-Men movie from Fox after being bought by Disney.Everyone knew they were out of a job after this, and it shows.Lazy acting, writing, and directing.Hard to say where exactly this went so wrong. But it was maybe doomed from the start.Which is inconceivable since the comic book story is the best the X-Men have ever told.

Dark Phoenix is in theaters now, but not for long…

3. – SERENITY

Released on: January 25th

My Score: 1/5

Rotten Tomatoes: 19%

The first movie on this list that I did not review on the show.I was going to skip this seductive thriller but then the movie came out and I heard rumblings of it being “so bad it’s good”.I heard the movie reveals a twist that will make your head spin.I caught it a couple weeks after its release, and can confirm both things to be true.Matthew McConaughey plays a fishing boat captain in a remote location who is asked by his ex-wife, Anne Hathaway, to kill her new husband. This was a popular genre of movie back in the 90s.Like Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct.High on sex appeal, low on intelligence, Serenity is absolutely so bad it’s good.It absolutely delivers a twist that will confound and infuriate you.But make no mistake, this movie is terrible.

Serenity is available to rent on DVD/Blu-Ray/Streaming now.

2. – THE WIND

Released on: April 5th

My Score: 1/5

Rotten Tomatoes: 80%

Elevated horror is a very popular genre in the last few years.Smart horror movies are flooding the marketplace as of late, and The Wind was one of those types of movies.Very hit and miss with audiences. They’re hard to get right.Movies like A Quiet Place and Hereditary all too often end up enraging audiences like mother! Or It Comes at Night.I rented The Wind, heard good things, good score from critics, but only 49% of audiences enjoyed it. Too slow, too boring, not much happens.Even the official plot description is boring, “a single woman faces the harshness and isolation of the untamed land in the Western frontier in the late 1800s. Can’t say much of anything about The Wind because I’ve already forgotten everything about it.

The Wind is available to rent on DVD/Blu-Ray/Streaming now.

1. – THE HUSTLE

Released on: May 10th

My Score: 1/5

Rotten Tomatoes: 15%

Anne Hathaway makes her second appearance on this list.Impressive.This female-centric remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels does nothing with the gender swap, it makes no statement on female empowerment, it just swaps the genders to swap the genders. This laughably bad effort is light on jokes and even lighter on purpose. Why does this movie exist? The original isn’t that great and isn’t that beloved. Why do this?

The Hustle is playing at Westwood 8 in Omaha.Often referred to by many in this town as “the cheap seats”.
